The Trinidad Coast Land Trust was founded in 1978 with the intention of providing public access to the coast and protecting the natural beauty and character of the coast from Little River to Big Lagoon for all living beings. TCLT believes that access to nature is a basic human right and the outdoors should be a safe and welcoming place for everyone including people of all racial and socioeconomic identities.
Indigenous Tribes in the lands we now know as the United States and the State of California were the first peoples to have experienced systemic oppression and subjugation at the hand of colonizers. To recognize and honor the first Native peoples and their lands upon which we live, and to undertake solidarity with Black Lives Matter, the board and staff stand with the members of our community to condemn all forms of bigotry, bias, violence and systemic racism. Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity matter. Environmental and social justice matters. Black lives matter. Indigenous lives matter. People of color matter.
As an organization active in the conservation community, a majority-white field, we must work to understand and dismantle the structures that perpetuate racial and social injustices and diversify the conservation community. Until there is just treatment of one another, there cannot be just treatment of the land.
We acknowledge that we have much more work to do. TCLT commits to developing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices across our policies and programs and we will incorporate these practices into our Strategic Plan. We commit to working side by side with our diverse community, partners, staff and volunteers to listen and learn. We commit to educating ourselves on how to improve our organization while simultaneously working against systemic racism. This is a first step in ensuring that the places we protect are equitably accessible -- welcoming and safe -- for all of the remarkable human diversity in our community.
In solidarity,
The Board and Staff of TCLT
