The Trinidad Coastal Land Trust (TCLT) is dedicated to providing coastal access & education for all people while caring for and restoring the coastal ecosystems of the Trinidad area. The Environmental Educator will work on a part-time basis to fulfill our various grant-funded education programs and volunteer management. This individual will bring to our team an enthusiastic attitude for coastal ecosystems, the ability to convey meaningful and relevant local natural history information to a variety of ages, and the desire to facilitate connections between community members and the natural world.s of ecological integrity, providing public access to the coast, community involvement in land conservation, and the belief that the wild and scenic northern Humboldt County coast is a source of joy and inspiration.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordinate education programs and community engagement (70%)
- Lead effort in supporting all outreach efforts at TCLT, including the following:
- State Parks Outdoor Equity Grant in collaboration with Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services.
- State Coastal Conservancy Explore the Coast in collaboration with Redwood Community Action Agency.
- Other interpretive programs as needed.
- Develop and implement a variety of outings, educational activities and explorations, games, and stewardship events.
- Design educational programs in accordance with current science standards: Develop curriculum and educational activities that adhere to established science standards, ensuring that programs are both engaging and educational, and provide students with a solid foundation in scientific principles/natural history.
- Produce program outreach materials, education manual, track program registrations, develop evaluation metrics, and gather participant feedback.
- Proficient in volunteer management: Demonstrates skill in coordinating and supervising volunteers, providing gratitude and recognition for their contributions, while also offering educational programs and training to enhance their effectiveness and engagement in the organization's mission (support recruitment of new volunteers, volunteer scheduling, and regular communication and incentives for returning volunteers).
- Regularly attends tabling events: Commits to attending tabling events, at least twice per month, which may occasionally occur on weekends, to represent the organization and engage with the community, promoting educational initiatives and fostering connections with stakeholders.
- Manage all aspects of social media (Instagram, Facebook), update organization’s website, and support monthly and seasonal newsletters.
- Willingness to support administrative tasks as needed, including correspondence, and other administrative duties, to ensure the smooth operation of educational programs and initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate has a combination of education, experiences, skills, and personal qualities necessary to carry out the duties of the position, including the following:
- Extensive experience in K-12 education : Demonstrated track record of effectively teaching and designing educational programs for diverse K-12 student populations, applying a variety of instructional strategies and resources to foster engagement across different age groups and learning levels.
- Demonstrated self-starter mentality : Proven ability to identify and address needs in programs and processes independently, exhibiting initiative and drive to propel projects forward autonomously.
- Confidence in leadership : Capable of effectively managing and leading programs involving diverse groups, including occasionally high-energy youth, with composure, authority, and adaptability.
- Exemplifies professionalism and radiates positive energy : Consistently maintains a professional demeanor while fostering a supportive and uplifting atmosphere, cultivating enthusiasm and engagement among students and colleagues alike.
- 2 or 4 year college degree with emphasis in education, natural resources, or interpretation.
- Genuinely enthusiastic about TCLTs purpose and working with diverse members of the public.
- Must have strong speaking and writing skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
- Can work collaboratively with a variety of partners.
- Demonstrated knowledge of local coastal ecosystems; including conifer forests, native plants, intertidal zone, seabirds, marine mammals, songbirds, etc.
- Prior experience working independently with youth and families in environmental education and interpretive settings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Zoom, social media applications, and basic graphic and website design.
- Ability to be available for a flexible schedule, including weekends (at least 1 weekend per month).
- Ability to travel to Trinidad, California up to three times per week.
Position Details & Compensation
- Range of 15 - 20 hours per week.
- $19 per hour (6 month term with possibility of extension)
- Fully vaccinated for Covid-19.
