In 2016, TCLT received a small 2-year grant from the State Coastal Conservancy's 'Explore the Coast' grant program to initiate a program to engage youth, students and citizens in our new environmental education 'Connecting Coast to Community' program that includes public school field trips, guided trail and low tide beach walks for the public, naturalist docent training courses and a citizen science seabird monitoring program of Trinidad’s CA Coastal National Monument offshore rocks.
The purpose of the project is to engage K-college students, families, visitors and residents in the exploration and conservation of local coastal habitats. The project places an emphasis on reaching audiences who are new to exploring coastal habitats. An overarching goal of the project is to set up the framework for a sustainable coastal education program in the Trinidad area. Building upon TCLT’s partnerships, the project will develop a student education and field trip programs, update and expand outreach materials, train volunteer naturalist guides and coastal stewards, and offer public guided walk program that improves public understanding and stewardship of coastal resources.
Carol Vander Meer is contracted to serve as the project manager and brings with her more than 20 years of experience working in environmental education with Friends of the Dunes, HSU Natural History Museum and Redwood National Park. Spring 2016 marked the kickoff of the Trinidad Coastal Naturalist Volunteer Training. Trainings are open to anyone interested in learning more about the Trinidad Coast and how to share their interest with others. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available including serving as walk ambassadors, coastal stewards and helping to lead public guided walks.
Contact us if your student's class or local club is interested in a guided field trip. Stay tuned for Naturalist Training course offerings in Spring 2018 and Guided Hikes starting early Summer 2018.
